Gangaur Festival in Jaipur – A Celebration of Rajasthan’s Culture

The Gangaur Festival is one of Rajasthan's most grand, vibrant, and sacred cultural celebrations. Deeply rooted in royal traditions and marital devotion, Gangaur honors Gauri (Goddess Parvati), the consort of Lord Shiva, celebrating love, marital harmony, spring, and womanhood. In the Pink City of Jaipur, Gangaur turns the historic streets into a spectacle of color, traditional music, folk dances, and grand royal processions.

Historical Significance & Royal Processions

Dating back centuries to the era of Maharajas, Gangaur is celebrated for 18 days following Holi. Women dress in traditional Rajasthani attire—vibrant Bandhani lehengas, royal Kundan jewelry, and intricate Mehendi. They carry beautifully decorated wooden idols of Gauri and Isar (Lord Shiva) on their heads, offering prayers for the longevity and health of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a noble life partner.

Royal City Palace Procession

The grand procession departs from the Zanana Deori of City Palace Jaipur, featuring caparisoned elephants, royal horses, palanquins, and traditional folk dancers.

Talkatora Lake Visarjan

The 2-day procession winds through Tripolia Bazaar, Chhoti Chaupar, and concludes with sacred immersion rituals at Talkatora Lake.

Cultural Attractions & Culinary Delights

During Gangaur, Jaipur comes alive with traditional Rajasthani folk music performances, Ghoomar dance circles, and sweet delicacies. The festival is incomplete without tasting Ghevar, a disc-shaped honeycomb sweet coated in rabri and saffron, specially prepared during Gangaur across Rajasthan.

Photography Tip for Visitors
